2019 World Naked Bike Ride Portland

2019 WNBR PDXThe starting point for the 2019 WNBR in PDX was Laurelhurst Park.  The park was an excellent choice because of the large, open grassy spaces and beautiful setting.  The weather was perfect, which was a relief, since there were thunderstorms days ahead of the ride.  Portland’s WNBR once again had the biggest turn out of any city in the world, with at least 10,000 bicyclists pedaling up and down the hills promoting cyclist safety, discouraging oil consumption, and representing numerous other social and political issues.

Raising consciousness of Body positivity is also a major component of the message.  The idea being that all people are uniquely beautiful and conventional views of attractiveness are promoted by corporate interests to lower self-esteem in order to sell products.

2019 WNBRThe route is never disclosed prior to the ride.  It remains a closely guarded secret, with only the ride organizers and the Portland police clued in.  Riders were met by throngs of cheering crowds all along the route.  The ride is a political protest.  As such, nudity is not illegal in Portland; it is an exercise of free speech.  Since the ride is primarily a demonstration against oil dependency, riders are asked not to drive to the gathering point ahead of the ride.  Instead, participants are asked to use Tri-Met or pedal to the starting point.  It’s actually a lot of fun to hop on a bus or Max line full of others on the way to the ride.

East Portland residents set up lawn chairs and stood curbside clapping and howling happily as the cyclist came by.  Thousands of riders continued across the Burnside Bridge and into downtown after the official end of the ride was reached.  It was another great WNBR event.  Keep-Portland-Weird thanks all of those who paused to have their pictures taken.  Below you will find a selection of Portland naked bike ride pics.  Enjoy!

Congratulations and thanks to the event organizer, pdxwnbr.org!  The 2019 WNBR was very well organized and the volunteers did a great job!
