Among the world’s largest naked bike rides!
The 2022 World Naked Bike ride took place on July 30th, launching from Peninsula Park, in southeast Portland. The ride ended at Colonel Summers Park at SE 17th Ave. and Taylor Street.
Along with important social and political issues, the WNBR is a demonstration for bicyclist safety, encouraging motorist to be mindful of cyclists. The Portland WNBR also raises awareness of body dysmorphia, and promotes the concept of body positivity, challenging how society often views body shape and size, as well as conventional notions of beauty.
By liberating ourselves from clothing, we demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists, increase self-esteem, and celebrate the idea that all humans are beautiful and none are perfect.
A good-sized crowd had already gathered by 8:00 PM. The ride started around 9:30, by which point many thousands were in attendance. The Naked Bike Ride route is never disclosed in advance of the event, so the riders were thrilled to find that the route included a trip across the new Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge over I-84. Riders cheered the new bridge crossing, which had just opened that day. What better way to commemorate the new bridge? Along the route spectators gathered and shouted support for the participants.
The WNBR is an annual demonstration against dependency on fossil fuels, so riders were asked not to drive to the demonstration. The World Naked Bike Ride is not only a protest against oil consumption. It is also about empowerment, the strength of and individuality, and raising consciousness of a variety and social and political issues. See our WNBR FAQ page for more about the ride, its history, and legality.
