The City of Roses

About this website

Keep-Portland-Weird.com was launched in 2012 as a platform for a few friends to share photos of what we love about Portland.  The vision slowly expanded into a vehicle for promoting the arts, culture, music, local small businesses, and events happening in P-town.  In spite of best intentions, there never seemed to be enough time to fully realize the goal.  Nevertheless, the site has been kept alive in an effort to capture and share pictures and stories of a little bit of what makes Portland unique.  It is a salute to to the fun, creative, and quirky people, organizations, and businesses that make Portland, Oregon the weirdest city in the Pacific Northwest, and arguably, the nation as a whole.

Why Weird?

Because we like it that way!  Portlanders take pride in the fact that we stand out as a city of, with more weed stores than liquor stores, a great local music scene, a politically active progressive community, friendly and laid back people, great art & architecture, tons of urban gardeners, a reasonably well-functioning government, an open & sex positive culture, and a strong sense of community.  Portland is known as a place where people come seeking like-minded individuals who believe in tolerance, kindness, and social justice.  Unfortunately, this is not “normal” in the United States, so that makes Portland weird, in a very good way!

Our unofficial city motto

The slogan is actually a bit of a rip-off of Keep Austin Weird (read more) but it may better characterize Portland than the official moto, The City of Roses.  What other city can claim that they are home to the 24 Hour Church of Elvis, dragon boat races, two (nearby) clothing optional beaches, fewer church goers than anywhere in America, bizarre costumes galore, and the largest World Naked Bike ride anywhere?
