World Naked Bike Ride FAQ

About the World Naked Bike Ride

What is the World Naked Bike Ride?

It is an annual protest against dependency on fossil fuels.

The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) began in 2003 as a protest against oil dependency and celebrating the power and individuality of the human body.  It was organized by a Canadian activist named Conrad Schmidt along with a group called Artists for Peace/Artists Against War (AFP/AAW).  It quickly caught on and by 2004, WNBR events occurred in 28 cities around the world.  By 2010 there were 74 cities, in 17 countries having World Naked Bike Rides.

The issues given attention by WNBR protests have expanded to a larger group of environmental and social concerns.  The specific theme varies from city to city and year to year.  Oil dependency is always a primary focus, as is bicyclist safety.  The clothing optional demonstration by thousands of people helps raise awareness of the issues.  Body acceptance/body positivity has also been a commonly publicized rallying point.  The intent being to dismiss the notions of beauty pushed by commercial interest in order to sell products, because of the damaging effects this has on individual self-esteem.

Isn’t Public Nudity Illegal?

Non-sexual nudity is not the same as lewd behavior.  The nudist and naturist view of nude recreation is that it is a liberating experience.  By shedding clothing, people expose their vulnerabilities and imperfections that are common to all.  It helps us connect with each other and with nature on a level some find spiritual.  The law varies from place to place.  Here in Portland Oregon we are fortunate to have two officially designated nude recreation areas close to the city.  The state of Oregon does not have a law prohibiting nudity, provided that it is of a non-sexual nature.   Generally, nudity is not prohibited on public lands.   The larger cities in the state have local ordinances prohibiting nudity in public.  However, when used as an expression of political speech, as is the case with the WNBR, it is permuted.

The Portland police do not disturb the World Naked Bike Ride; in fact, police escort the riders and manage traffic control to ensure the ride goes on safely.  Portland’s WNBR has broken attendance records year after year.  The number of riders the last few years has topped 10,000, and that brings world wide attention to the causes.  The event may have a joyful, carnival-like atmosphere but the awareness raised by the protest can has a powerful affect.
